The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm that allows the control of the physical world via the Internet and both machine-to-machine (M2M) and human-to-machine (H2M) communication. The proliferation of smart devices and mobile applications has created significant opportunities for a more efficient, productive, and sustainable society. Nowadays, most devices around us are either connected to the IoT or are about to be, many of which have limited computational capability and storage capacity. Meeting high-speed data processing and shorter response time requirements of IoT systems can be challenging with current centralized cloud-based solutions. With all the IoT devices sharing information, there is also the need to protect the privacy of individual users who are using these devices. Fog or edge computing paradigm that allows bringing computing resources and application services closer to where the data is being generated and acted upon can reduce the amount of data transferred to the cloud for processing and analysis, thus reducing response time while improving privacy and security. The proposed research will develop efficient schemes for managing the IoT devices through fog or edge computing advantages, coupled with software-defined networking, for services in several IoT domains (i.e., smart cities, vehicular networks, smart grids, wireless sensor networks, social networks, etc.), and address some general issues such as security, privacy, and trust with data and service migration among fog devices and between fog and cloud. This proposal will also address the issues and challenges that may arise in developing energy efficient and sustainable infrastructures, protocols, and future applications.
