We propose to create and evaluate techniques for multi-projector Curved 3D (C3D) displays that are interactive, high-resolution, multi-person, 3D perspective-corrected, and stereoscopic. The approach is based on fish tank virtual reality (FTVR) that uses stereo and head-coupled virtual reality on high-resolution desktop displays. However, our new class of FTVR display technology uses geometric shapes such as spheres and cubes, to create a contained virtual reality volume. Our distinct approach will allow the display to be manipulated for viewing and controlling a 3D scene from different perspectives by more than one person and through multi-touch input. We have created a spherical display prototype, which we will extend in a number of targeted technical areas based on the strategic directions of our supporting partner, B-Con Engineering. We propose to explore three primary challenges for C3D displays: 1. Creation of seamless multi-projection and multi-touch input on curved surfaces, 2. Provide 3D rendering including multi-viewer, stereo cues, and interaction techniques 3. Create associated technology to support two primary applications 3D teleconferencing and 3D visualization in complex environments. B-Con Engineering is providing cash and in-kind contributions toward both the hardware and software requirements including optical systems expertise for C3D displays. We will construct prototype C3D displays to advance the technology, evaluate its effectiveness, and demonstrate applications targeting B-Con's market. Together, our partner, collaborators, and students will benefit through this project by establishing the foundations of a new C3D technology to open the door for new applications in communications, computer-aided design, and data visualization to contribute to the Canadian economy.
