IFTech is an IT R&D company with a business focus on the design and commercialization of ARAIG which is a sensory immersive wearable technology designed to provide sensory signatures to the wearer. ARAIG is the first multi-sensory multidirectional, force feedback device. Sensory stimulations are in the form of muscle stimulation and vibration. This will affect the user's interaction with this environment and increase their sense of immersion. At present, IFTech lack expertise in Big Data analytics and knowledge discovery to create a framework to develop performance metrics to analyse sensor signals sent to the wearer that could be generated by the immersive environment. McGregor commenced her collaborations with IFTech through an NSERC Engage grant where an initial prototype was created to demonstrate the concept using a virtual reality game, ArmA 3, ARAIG and McGregor Athena Big Data platform for the real-time analysis. IFTech used that knowledge to develop a now commercialised ARAIG Software Development Kit however to data that does not include functionality for an analytics platform and has not been demonstrated with a commercial game. Within this NSERC CRD research project the research goals are to: 1) advance research in the domain of haptic feedback analytics through the creation of a protocol for haptic data interchange for analytics; 2) advance analytics research to create haptic feedback analytics; and 3) demonstrate this approach with a commercialisable solution for VBS3, ARAIG and Athena. Contributions in these areas and knowledge translation will advance academic research in the areas of human computer interaction, haptics, gaming and analytics. Of value to IFTech will be the creation of a VBS3 add on that demonstrates the extended ARAIG SDK and enables plug and play solution for purchasers of VBS3 and ARAIG. The timing of this research is very appropriate for IFTech who are completing the final planning for their first production run of ARAIG garments for commercial use later this year.
