New connections between mathematics and applied data analysis have facilitated new methods of data collection and interpretation. This has led to a fundamentally new method of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with remarkable improvements in image quality and speed of image acquisition. The key is to understand the structure of the signal lurking in the data -- in many cases this signal belongs to a complex, yet low-dimensional, set. I study these structures, how they behave under various forms of measurement acquisition, and how to take advantage of their low dimensionality to make inferences in a computationally efficient manner.
