Understanding ore deposits from an Earth systems perspective: Ore deposits are products of common natural processes, but they only form where these processes operate sequentially, constructively, and optimally. Omission or inefficiency of any process in the sequence can reduce or destroy the systems ore-forming potential. This research program aims to characterize and understand the full sequence of processes necessary for the formation of ore deposits (metallogeny), with focus on copper and gold, and to place these deposits in the context of large-scale natural systems such as plate tectonics, and in relation to Earths geological evolution over time.
