The Red Chris porphyry Cu-Au deposit in northern British Columbia is unusual in containing a deep high-grade zone of Cu-Au mineralization, which may be economic to mine by deep open pit or underground methods (most porphyry deposits are relatively low grade, and are only economic to mine as bulk open pit operations). Red Chris is thus an example of a new type of deposit that is being actively sought by the mining industry, in the face of declining discovery rates of near surface, easily mineable deposits.
