Motivation drives cognitive engagement and performance across the lifespan. We work hard at challenges that we enjoy, such as trivia games and crossword puzzles. We also put effort into less enjoyable tasks, such as filing our tax returns, if motivational incentives are in place. However, little is known about age-related changes in the link between motivation, brain, and cognition. The proposed research will shed light on this issue through a powerful combination of behavioural, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging methods. Findings from this research will help optimize motivation-based technologies to help Canadians maintain and improve their cognitive capacity as they age.
