The fifth generation (5G) wireless networks aim to enable order-of-magnitude increases in connectivity, capacity, and speed. Such a goal can be achieved in part by utilizing larger frequency bandwidth or deploying denser base stations. However, as the number of wireless devices is increasing rapidly, it is inevitable that multiple devices communicate over the same time and spectrum. Consequently, mitigating the interference in concurrent transmissions is a pivotal challenge for the 5G networks. In this project, we build on two recent breakthroughs by the PI, Dr. Lele Wang, and her collaborators on low-complexity coding schemes that achieve the theoretically optimal performance of maximum likelihood decoding. We will investigate the feasibility of these schemes in various 5G user cases such as enhanced mobile broadband and mission-critical machine type communication that requires high reliability and low latency. The expected outcomes from the project are novel interference mitigation schemes that significantly improve upon the existing schemes in 4G networks. These algorithms will be incorporated as the physical layer interference management scheme in the real-world 5G hub Rogers Communication Inc. will build on the University of British Columbia campus. This project will be beneficial to ensure Canada remains as leaders in communication technology. It will also create invaluable training opportunities for involved students and postdoctoral researchers to gain research skills and expertise in wireless communication technology.
