Professor Dutchers research program focuses on developing a fundamental understanding and predictive power for the physical properties of polymers, biopolymers and bacterial cells at interfaces. The approach is primarily experimental, using a wide variety of state-of-the-art, surface-sensitive techniques and unique sample geometries, and the results are interpreted in terms of simplified, theoretical models that capture the essential physics and underlying mechanisms. The work is necessarily multidisciplinary, spanning many disciplines such as physics, chemistry, microbiology, and food science, and local, national and international collaborations form an essential part of the research program.
