Two fields of health research that benefit greatly from radioactive pharmaceuticals (radioactive drugs) are cancer and bacterial infections. Radiopharmaceuticals can be used with very sensitive molecular imaging techniques to learn new information about important biological and physiological processes. Radiopharmaceutical agents are routinely used for early detection, staging, and treatment of cancer, and also for imaging bacterial infections. The objective of this Canada Research Chair will be the creation of new radiopharmaceuticals to selectively target a number of unique types of cancer to provide improved and personalized medicine, and to pioneer new radioactive therapeutic agents to treat the emerging threat of multi-drug resistant bacteria.
