Sustainable barrier coating for packaging grade paper

Packaging is omnipresent in our life, with consumers and governments now pushing industry to develop new products that are more environmentally friendly and easier to reuse and to recycle. These developments open several opportunities for the pulp and paper industry to improve its competitive position in the packaging market and to increase the production of fiber-based packaging. This in turn provides a possibility for the industry to convert existing newsprint mills (facing a severe decline in demand) to the production of cardboard and other packaging products. The objective of this research project is to develop an innovative coating barrier which is recyclable, repulpable, biosourced and compostable. This project include activities from laboratory works to pilot trials on Innofibre pilot coater.
