Professor Hoods research program is aimed at investigating the role of exercise in enhancing the synthesis of mitochondria, the cellular organelles responsible for energy production, with a focus on skeletal muscle. Combining an analysis of mitochondrial biology with exercise physiology, Hoods studies allow us to understand the role of regular exercise in reversing mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death which occur during the normal process of aging, as well as in metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. This research will have important implications for our understanding of the value of exercise in improving metabolic health, and in rejuvenating aging muscle.
