A fundamental question in biology is how gene expression can be controlled to permit cells with similar genomes to have very different behaviors. We propose to investigate how the similar genomes of the yeasts C. albicans and S. cerevisiae, can generate either a human pathogen causing potentially lethal infections in immunocompromised patients, or a highly beneficial industrial organism essential for making bread and wine. To do this we will map out the regulatory circuits in the pathogen C. albicans and compare them to the circuits already identified in the bakers yeast, and study how these differences have evolved.
