Microorganisms conduct critical geochemical cycling on Earth, impacting water quality and shaping the environment around us. Despite their ecological importance, the vast majority of microbial diversity and metabolic potential remains unknown. Dr. Laura Hugs research seeks to discover and characterize new lineages of microbial life from highly contaminated sites. Microorganisms thriving in these harsh environments can be used to clean up contaminants, develop new tools for biotech applications, and harvest valuable materials cheaply and efficiently. Dr. Hugs work has the potential to redefine the way we look at waste sites like landfills as resources rather than refuse.
