Brain cell communication, learning, and memory depend on the activity and plasticity of synapses, submicron structures connecting neurons. Synaptic signaling and remodeling involve mechanisms taking place at the nanoscale, requiring optical nanoscopymethods to be resolved and understood. The proposed research program will combine machine learning with developments in optical nanoscopy to push the resolution and analysis of synaptic imaging. The proposed CRC is expected to drive innovation at the interface of Neuroscience, Machine Learning and Photonics, leading to discoveries on the molecular mechanisms supporting learning and memory and to novel bioimaging tools with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.
