Molecular semiconductorssoft synthetic materials akin to plastics or car paintare rapidly finding their way into consumer electronics due to their low cost and the ease with which they can be fabricated on large and flexible surfaces. Perhaps most importantly, they are designer materials, limited only by a chemists skill and imagination. The objective of the proposed Chair is to develop new applications for organic semiconductors and to answer open questions key to improving existing technologies. The Chair will develop new classes of molecular devices with applications in quantum information, photochemistry and biophotonics. Meanwhile, fundamental studies will target a promising set of new solar cell materials, with the objective of delivering a clean and affordable renewable energy future for Canadians.
