Development and commercialization of gas sensors for adults' diaper are of paramount importance for elderly care solutions. The main focus of the present project will be the conception of a smart diaper sensor based-graphene to detect fecal sulfide volatile gas (H2S). Siaj lab will develop, characterize and test an encapsulated graphene field effect transistor (gFET) in gas permeable hydrophobic membranes for H2S detection. The graphene-based sensor will be implemented in the adult's diaper. Such smart diapers meet the needs in hospitals, pre-schools, nursing homes and it could benefit a wide elderly growing population. This project brings together a Canadian research group (Siaj, at UQAM) and a Canadian company (Seneca Sense Technologies Inc., SST Inc.) that combines a unique complementary expertise in graphene growth and sensing device development for wearable devices that sense wetness events. To perform this work, SST Inc. seeks to establish new research collaboration with Pr Siaj. An important element for attaining its objectives is SST Inc.'s strategy to leverage its internal R&D activities with strong collaborative links with Canadian-based University groups. The objectives of the project match the priorities of the company in developing smart diapers for the elderly. Siaj's group activities focus on the growth and synthesis of graphene material and their integration as chemical sensors. Siaj's group expertise will be a key to help SST Inc. for the proposed project. Research and Development (R&D) within gas sensor sector suggests that graphene offers a whole new world capable of detecting even one atom or molecule of gas. To this end, we will shear Siaj's Lab knowledge with the company in graphene growth and devices gFET fabrication. In recent years, much effort has been put into developing new wearable adult brief sensing technology that can reduce instances of diaper rash and urinary and fecal tract infections. A quick, sensitive, and low-cost detection method for fecal sulfide volatile gas are eagerly demanded. The smart adult's diaper sensor project will improve patient care, reduce operational costs and fit squarely into a growing home care market.
