Advances in DNA sequencing, synthesis and assembly of DNA parts have revolutionized the way biological systems are characterized and engineered leading to an exciting opportunity to apply them for addressing global challenges. In parallel, systems approaches to modeling biology have enabled the integration of large-scale genomic data sets to understand the metabolic networks that drives cellular functions and to manipulate these metabolic systems for practical applications in energy, environment and medicine. Specifically, we will develop novel methods for analyzing and engineering metabolic systems and apply them for the production of bio-nylon and probiotics for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
