Advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) are two ways to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities. To this end, ADAS and AV systems regularly monitor the surrounding of the car to identify vulnerable road users (VRU), predict their intentions and warn the driver or make rational and safe decisions. This requires accurate and robust detection of VRUs regardless of their position relative to the car and the ambient light (daytime or night). In the context of this project, we aim to develop fast and accurate methods based on artificial neural networks to detect VRUs using the 3D point cloud generated by LIDARs and assess their effectiveness and accuracy in locating VRUs.
