Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death worldwide. Dysfunction of the hERG/Kv11.1 ion channel is responsible for long QT syndrome type 2 (LQT2), which increases the risk of arrhythmia and cardiac arrest and is present in 1/2500 Caucasians.
