Through a collaboration with Carleton University, Viavi solutions hopes to improve on their existing technologies for mode conversion and polarization scrambling. Mode conversion technologies allow for enhanced regulation of loss in the network and would improve the reliability of optical power measurements. Polarization scrambling is desirable in telecommunications networks in order to eliminate deleterious polarization dependent effects such as polarization dependent loss and polarization mode dispersion. We will be investigating the use of long period fiber Bragg gratings, an area in which Carleton researchers have considerable expertise, for use in mode conversion. In a separate study we will be investigating the feasibility of emerging materials such as high Verdet constant glasses or highly non-linear fiber for use in polarization scramblers.
