The objective of the research program is to gain better understanding of the mechanisms required for dealing with the temporal requirements in daily life. Basically, a psychophysical approach (models, laws, methods, quantitative analyses) is adopted for empirically investigating the timing problems and analyzing data. It is also planned to use imaging techniques for studying the cerebral mechanisms involved in temporal processing. The empirical investigations during the next term of the program include three main investigating avenues: (a) a multimodal approach with sequences of successive intervals marked by signals delivered from different sensory modes, (b) an approach based on the effect of internal body states and (c) an approach focusing on the influence of the symbolic meaning of stimuli marking intervals.
This research program should contribute to fundamental knowledge about the mechanisms involved in the temporal adaptation to the environment and about the properties of the sensory modalities. Ultimately, in terms of applications, the program should prove useful for developing tests of attentional capacities and rehabilitation methods for training (auditory/rhythmic and imaging training) people having speech or locomotion deficits.
