The Artificial/Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Systems disciplines postulated some time ago are still widely used these days. These methodologies and techniques are well established, known, and recognized worldwide as alternatives to classical and traditional methods for the solution of difficult problems in Engineering, Science, and close fields.
On the other hand, Artificial/Computational Sapience (Wisdom) and Sapient (Wise) Systems disciplines/fields have been explored only by very few researchers in the last decade [19]. These new disciplines include some concepts that overlap with some concepts from the Artificial/Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Systems; however, these new disciplines also present, deal with, and include some distinctive principles and concepts that distinguish these new disciplines as novel in their own right.
In particular, the implementations and applications of Artificial/Computational Sapience and Sapient Systems disciplines can lead to some methodologies that are effective for dealing with real-time Decision Making problems and Control issues normally encountered in many and diverse Engineering and Science fields.
It is important to mention that I was the first in the scientific and academic community to postulate formally Artificial/Computational Sapience (Wisdom) and Sapient (Wise) Systems as new disciplines/fields in the past decade [20].
Furthermore, I also conceived a formal Paradigm for Sapient (Wise) Decision and Control, and indicated its realization and implementation in many and diverse fields/areas, [20]. My Paradigm can be effectively used to approximate inverse continuous functions (output/input) frequently present in dynamic and highly non-linear systems; and also include the means to consider the Sapient Systems distinct characteristics.
The main objective of the proposed research program is to further investigate thoroughly the development of my Paradigm by implementing it under two formulations: at the functional level; and at the rate of change level.
Here, each formulation will be used to solve some test-bed (Manufacturing, Robotics, Optimization) problems, where Decision Making in real time takes a prominent role. These test-bed examples serve to evaluate each formulation diversity, implementation suitability, and effectiveness.
The proposed research program will facilitate the development of advanced non-conventional (inferential) techniques that include simple and efficient adaptive and learning strategies; and simultaneously comply easily with the distinctive Sapient (Wise) Systems characteristics.
This proposed research program is quite original and novel, and it is also expected to have in the long term a significant and high impact in many & diverse Engineering and Science and close fields/areas. In fact, it can lead to new scientific and technological venues/directions that will give Canada a leading edge and advantage on a highly competitive world environment.
