Empowering patients to make timely and appropriate decisions regarding their health can fundamentally change the consumption of healthcare. For example, recent advances in continuous glucose monitoring have enabled insulin-dependent diabetes patients to titrate their insulin dosing and hence achieve tighter glycemic control in a sustained manner. There is an opportunity to drive similar diagnostic-based disruption in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Heart Failure (HF) and even inflammation or immune response mediated diseases such as Coronary Vascular Disease (CVD) and celiac disease (CD). The Vallée-Bélisle lab at the University of Montreal recently reported and patented a family of electrochemical DNA-based assays that can deliver lab quality measurements at home from one drop of whole blood, thereby enabling the patient to titrate its therapy in real-time. The proposed project will provide scientific and engineering evidence establishing the technical feasibility to develop a prototype electrochemical DNA-based sensor and will develop this prototype for the detection of 3 key markers for monitoring CKD and HF at home.
