Underground power cables are long, plastic-insulated, high-voltage electrical conductors. These cables form the backbone of electrical power transmission and distribution networks. Although underground cables have lower fault rates and maintenance requirements than overhead power lines, underground distribution cables cannot be readily physically inspected. For this reason, cables are a leading cause of power outages attributed to defective equipment. Outages in the distribution system present risks to safety, the environment, and the economy, as well as indirect risks associated with a lack of power service to critical public infrastructure. This research project will produce advanced predictive frameworks to support the reliability of critical urban electricity distribution systems by addressing challenges in condition assessment and risk to underground power cables.
