Mass timber is an engineered wood material (e.g. cross-laminated timber, parallel strand timber, glue laminated timber, etc) that can be used as the primary structure and building envelope for mid to high-risebuildings and is widely considered to be more sustainable than concrete and steel. Although mass timber has been available in the North American market since the early 2000s, there is a gap of research on mass timber serviceability and durability, particularly hygrothermal performance and its relationship to moisture cycling, creep and differential movement. To research the hygrothermal properties of mass timber and the ability to predict durability, Ryerson University has partnered with the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to fill this gap for designers, consumers, manufacturers, and governments across Canada. The research will comprise linking laboratory experimentation with continued monitoring/measurement and in-situ testing during construction and occupancy of the TRCA's new administrative office building situated in Toronto, ON. The prime objective of this research is to create a numerical tool to foster understanding and prediction of the durability of mass timber buildings. Two secondary objectives are: (1) to enhance current state of the art research associated with mass timber sensor design and monitoring, and (2) to increase the understanding of the coupled performance of moisture cycling and dimensional changes in mass timber buildings. This research project will provide to Canada a large, robust data set, with predictive capability, to Canadianmanufacturers, designers, consultants, governments, and the public using various traditional academic andnon-traditional dissemination outlets.
