The transition zone between the temperate and boreal forests is central to Canada's natural environment, history, culture and economy. This zone is now subject to significant climatic stress for which there is a great degree of uncertainty as to its impact on forest dynamics and composition, through the direct action of climate, disturbance regimes, and the interaction between migrating and established species. Our team is made of professionals from the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP), the Canadian Forest Service and the Forex, Eacom and RYAM companies. Researchers form UQAM, UQAT, ULaval and UdeM complete the team. Our research aims to acquire new knowledge on these various processes by analyzing the factors that currently limit the distribution of northern sugar stands and by estimating how climate and disturbance regimes may have controlled their distribution in the past (objective 1). The present climatic conditions make the maple stands present a poor quality and this problem faced by the industry is also poorly known. It therefore becomes important to characterize the phenomenon and to link it to a series of variables, notably climate and genetics and the impact of extreme climatic events as felt by maple wood anatomy and annuel growth (objective 2). To this information will be added estimates on the current distribution of maple groves and all the communities making up the forest mosaic. On the basis of this knowledge, we will be able to model the current and future growth and quality of the sugar stands (objective 3). This research will have repercussions on our understanding of the mechanisms limiting forest stands to their distribution limit and, consequently, on our ability to predict the evolution of their distribution following climate change. These various elements will be used by the MFFP and compagnies to improve existing management strategies.
