英文摘要
This proposal is a collaboration between Symgery and experts in real-time physics simulation from the the École de technologie supérieure and McGill University. The proposed research will develop and implement novel mathematical models, techniques, and algorithms that address key technical challenges in soft tissue simulation and cutting for virtual surgery. Specifically, we will focus on the development of (i) hybrid models for elastic simulation that will improve efficient real-time cutting of anatomical structures, (ii) precise contact handling of tool interactions to improve the realism of haptic rendering, and (iii) efficient solvers for heterogeneous elastic simulations. Taken together, these technological advancements will expand Symgery's simulation capacities by improving the modeling of anatomical structures and contact during surgical tool interactions. Furthermore, the project will train a group of four HQP trainees, with the proposed work being structured into three groups of activities that have several interconnection points. We expect that the outcomes of this collaboration will produce important research findings that will strongly contribute to the Canadian economy. The surgical simulation and virtual reality training industry has strong roots in Quebec, and the expected results will further strengthen this growing technology sector. The outcomes will additionally generate new business opportunities and contribute to the creation of new jobs, which will be of significant benefit to our partner, Symgery Inc., and Canadian society in general.
