There is a growing interest in enhancing the sustainability of wastewater treatment by producing high quality effluents with reduced energy consumption. The membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) has considerable potential in this regard due to its promise of high oxygen transfer efficiencies (OTEs) with low energy input. There has however been limited optimization of MABRs at full scale. The proposed study will optimize the operation of a full scale MABR facility that is currently under construction at the Hespeler, Ontario wastewater treatment plant. The impact of solids residence time, organic loading and oxygen supply on key performance metrics related to energy consumption and effluent quality will be assessed. Specifically, the ability to achieve total nitrogen and micro pollutant removal will be emphasized. The impact of operating conditions on the composition of the microbial communities will be examined to obtain insight into the active metabolisms in the system. The results of this study will be of broad interest to the wastewater community (regulators, wastewater treatment plant owners and operators, consulting engineers, technology providers) as there is a significant demand for technologies that can be employed to upgrade treatment in a sustainable manner.
