Wastewater treatment plants are being required to achieve increasingly stringent effluent concentrations of phosphorus. The addition of chemicals for phosphorus removal is essential to achieve extremely low concentrations of phosphorus. However, the chemical and physical processes that are involved in achieving high phosphorus removal efficiencies are not well understood. Previous research has indicated that the solids residence time (the average time that suspendeds solids are retained in a system) and the kinetics of adsorption and desorption (the rate at which phosphorus attaches to or detaches from solids) may impact upon the effective solubility ofphosphorus. The effective solubility will impact upon the concentrations that are discharged from a wastewater treatment systems and will also affect the availability ofphosphorus to biomass
