Bioenergy as a renewable energy resource is gaining a great interest and it accounts for approximately 6% of Canada's total energy supply. Anaerobic digestion of waste for biological methane production can be a sustainable source of renewable energy as well as an efficient waste management technique. The rate limiting step of anaerobic digestion of solid waste is the hydrolysis, where the cell wall is broken down allowing the organic matter inside the cell to be available for biological degradation. Thus, significant effort is required to enhance the hydrolysis step and thus improve the performance of anaerobic digestion. The goal of this project is to evaluate the effect of chemical pretreatment of thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) on the anaerobic digestion performance. In this research proposal, the effect of combined pretreatment (homogenization + chemical) on the methane production, solids reduction efficiency, and odor reduction will be investigated.
