CityHousing Hamilton (CHH) provides affordable housing in the Hamilton region. CHH is the largest affordable housing provider in Hamilton, and the 3rd largest housing provider in the province of Ontario. Their portfolio consists of approximately 7,000 units across over 1,200 properties that include apartments, townhomes, semi-detached and detached dwellings. Currently, CHH does not have the capability to monitor real-time operations and key performance indicators of its heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and boilers in the majority of its buildings. That creates two main challenges: 1) delayed detection/notification if a system is down (the notification is usually from a tenant complaint) and 2) no ability to identify early energy efficiency issues. The Mohawk College Energy & Power Innovation Centre (EPIC) and CHH will collaboratively investigate and pilot a cost effective monitoring system that can help CHH promptly detect failures and/or energy efficiency issues in their HVAC and boiler equipment in their buildings. EPIC has sensor system and data analyses expertise that is well aligned to support the CHH needs for data oversight and improving issue identification and benefiting system efficiency. CHH will use the project results to implement cost effective monitoring systems on their equipment, ensure timely repairs, and address costly efficiency issues promptly.
