This research will examine a range of transport phenomena in sustainable energy systems, particularly multiphase processes in the thermochemical copper-chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle of hydrogen production and thermal management systems. Hydrogen can serve as an important form of energy storage for off-peak nuclear energy and intermittent renewables, such as wind and solar energy, as well as stabilize the fluctuating load on the electric power grid. However, current hydrogen production methods are based primarily on fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Promising alternatives for sustainable hydrogen production are thermochemical cycles, in which the overall water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is achieved through a continuous cycle of reactions. The advantage of these cycles is that chemical reactions form a closed internal loop and recycle all intermediate chemicals continuously, without emitting greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This collaboration will enable research on transport phenomena to improve the performance of the cycle and bring it closer to commercialization. The outcome of this research will help to position Canada as a global leader in low-carbon smart mobility technologies. These advancements will also help to grow the low-carbon technology eco-system in the country, leading to job growth and long-term economic development.
