Data Serving Canadians - Strategy for a Data-Driven Innovation Ecosystem

Campus Montréal, the alliance of Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal, seeks to achieve the highest levels of excellence in data-driven innovation by implementing an ambitious research and innovation strategy that relies upon cutting-edge, world-leading scientific expertise and outstanding research capacity emerging from years of sustained investments in the science of data, together with a strong history of knowledge and technology transfer. This strategy aims at further increasing our leadership in data science and opening unexplored paths in machine learning and operations research that will permeate all knowledge-based economic sectors and lead to transformative applications that will benefit all Canadians. Through the creation of the Institute for Data Valorisation (IVADO), Campus Montréal has developped a five-pronged approach that will 1) enhance the capacity and intensity of data-driven research; 2) train highly-skilled data-scientists and managers to meet a growing demand; 3) mobilize knowledge and engage industrial partners in technology transfer; 4) establish a Montréal-based international data-science network of excellence; 5) demonstrate exemplary stewardship in academia-industry collaborations and technology transfer. The strategy, based on targeted investments and concerted actions, will address core science, technology, capacity building, industrial needs, entrepreneurship and societal issues in a resolutely interdisciplinary approach. By leveraging our existing international leadership position in machine learning and operations research, our ultimate goal is to spearhead a dynamic data-driven innovation ecosystem with the full commitment of all stakeholders, which will in turn translate into a powerful catalyzer for creativity, innovation and economic development for Canada at the global scale.
