Enhancing the value and sustainability of our natural and renewable resources has important societal, economic and environmental impacts. Canadian policies such as Ontario's Green Energy and Green Economy Act (2009) and Environment Canada's Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations (WSER) (2012) have increased incentives for renewable energy generation, bioproduct recovery and the application of environmentally sustainable approaches to manage our water, waste and renewable resources. My research program will (1) enhance our fundamental understanding of complex eco-engineered treatment systems; and (2) advance environmentally sound biofuel/bioproduct recovery approaches from algal and residual biomass systems. This research will enhance Canada's capacity for effective influence in applied environmental sustainability and the management of bioresources that will assist Canada in meeting its international climate change commitments through sustained carbon and nutrient recycling; and in developing biomass modification and conversion approaches that will stimulate its bioeconomy.
