Over the past decades, software development has transitioned from the solo activity of developing standalone programs to a highly distributed and collaborative approach that contributes to complex software ecosystems. Nowadays we see the widespread adoption of Web-based social tools that facilitate the emergence of a participatory development culture, where developers are keen to connect with, learn from, and co-create with others. However, researchers have not kept pace with understanding how social tools may positively or negatively influence software development. I propose to investigate how social tools are used and then improve them so that they enhance distributed software development activities.
