In animals, cells coordinate their behaviours and move in groups to form, repair or invade tissues. The mechanisms used by cells to coordinate their movements are unclear. Increasing evidence indicates that cells sense, transmit and respond to mechanical forces. Dr. Fernandez-Gonzalez will use the collective movements that drive embryonic wound repair in fruit fly embryos¿together with live imaging, computational models and a combination of genetic, pharmacological and biophysical manipulations¿to understand the physical signals used by cells to communicate their behaviours and coordinate cell migration.
