Dr. Willerth¿s research program develops innovative strategies for engineering personalized neural tissues. Current methods for generating neural tissues require lengthy, low throughput, labor-intensive processes. The major objectives of this program include 1) using novel bioinks to 3D print neural tissues using stem cells and 2) directly engineering neural tissue by reprogramming mature cells into neurons, the main functional cells of the nervous system. 3D bioprinting and direct reprogramming address the limitations of currently used methods. This proposed work will validate these engineered neural tissues as novel tools for drug screening and understanding disease.
