Cobots are collaborative robots designed to operate alongside people. This emerging field is set to have enormous impact in diverse sectors from manufacturing to healthcare. However, before cobots can become ubiquitous and widely accepted, their interactions with humans must be verified to be safe, reliable and adaptable. The proposed research addresses these challenges by developing new technologies for capable and safe cobots, and will use a cobot that is unique in Canada as a research testbed. The innovations developed will enable Canadian companies to create safe and capable cobots for key international markets, and establish Canadian leadership in collaborative robotics.
