With continued reductions in sensor cost, robotic systems are now often able make use of multiple sensors and sensing modalities to enable robust operation. However, to accurately fuse data from several sensors into a single, consistent representation, the sensors must be calibrated relative to one another. Calibration is typically a laborious and time-consuming manual task, which usually needs to be repeated during operation. The proposed research project will develop methods to automatically calibrate the sensors on-board robots produced by MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) Robotics and Automation. Fully automatic calibration has the potential to reduce operating costs and increase the flexibility of the company's robotic platforms.
