At the heart of intelligent communities is a growing network of complex digital interactions that create massive amount of data flowing on optical fibers that form the backbone of high speed networks, pushing the technology to its limit. This CRC proposes research into photonic technologies that will multiply the amount of information carried on optical links. The research builds on previous achievements in innovative designs of optical fibers and amplifiers. The CRC will also investigate photonic microsystems integrated in silicon photonic chips for applications as transceivers and sensors, helping to gather and transmit information for the end-user to the cloud.
