As organisms transition from a uni- to a multi-cellular body-plan, we expect their cells to become highly specialised. However, we have found that sensory cells that detect sound, retain the molecular-machinery normally used for moving. Dr. Mhatre will investigate how these sensory cells use their motility to enhance perception. Using new technology that enables vibration measurement even inside opaque organs, Dr. Mhatre will study sound-sensing cells and motile single-celled organisms, and will develop a picture of how this remarkable synergistic system works and its evolutionary origins. Insights from this work will guide the future design of ¿smart¿ sensors.
