Oxygen deprivation ¿ which can arise in human diseases and in many extreme environments in nature ¿ can be catastrophic to normal cellular function. And yet, some unique animals can thrive in environments where oxygen is scarce (hypoxia). My research program aims to uncover evolved mechanisms of hypoxia tolerance across such species, and how these mechanisms help animals cope with natural and human-induced environmental stress. My proposed work has a strong emphasis on training, and will further develop international collaboration and partnerships in public and private sectors. My work will thus have strong impacts in academia and beyond.
