Numerical simulations are crucial for obtaining realistic weather and climate simulations. In this project, Dr. Bihlo will develop new classes of numerical methods that are particularly suitable for long-term simulations, which are required for example in climate prediction. This will be accomplished by using the geometric properties of the equations describing the atmosphere-ocean system, such as symmetries and conservation laws, as guiding principle for designing these numerical methods. Dr. Bihlo will showcase this procedure for several important models from geophysical fluid dynamics, that are routinely used as benchmarks for developing new numerical methodologies in this field.
