Cities across Canada rely on stormwater management ponds to prevent urban flooding and control sediments flowing into our creeks and streams. These ponds are stitched into our suburban and industrial lands as green spaces. For city staff, responsible for hundreds of stormwater ponds, these infrastructures are logistically challenging systems. With advancements in sensors and private wireless networks, real-time monitoring of stormwater ponds is possible and affordable for the first time. This research will pioneer proactive, data-driven decision-making for stormwater management pond operations utilizing a novel water monitoring solution operating on scientific-grade sensors providing data across a dedicated secure network to provide real-time data on the health of natural and man-made critical water infrastructure. By regularly monitoring the water quality as well as flow characteristics of the ponds daily, minor issues can be addressed immediately, reducing the risk of extremely costly events.
