Discharge of insufficiently treated municipal wastewater into the natural water bodies can cause eutrophication in the receiving water bodies because municipal wastewater generally contains excessive nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). In Canada, sludge generated from municipal wastewater treatment plants is generally treated via anaerobic digestion to stabilize the sludge, reduce the sludge volume and to recover energy. Digested sludge liquor separated from the solids through the dewatering processes commonly contains high concentrations of ammonia, and requires further treatment to reduce the ammonia content.This three-year project aims to develop a cost-efficient and robust aerobic granular sludge (AGS) based single-reactor nitritation/denitritation and single-reactor nitritation/anammox processes for the nitrogen reduction from ammonia-rich sludge liquor. The operation and control strategies of the AGS technology will be evaluated and optimized using both laboratory- and pilot-scale bioreactors. The biochemical and molecular tools developed in Liu's laboratories will be applied to advance the knowledge of physicochemical and biological properties and activities of the microbial granular sludge under various operation and control conditions. These activities will enable us to evaluate biodegradation mechanisms and provide guidance for future full-scale implementation.
