Biofilm colonization on solids surfaces is a normal form of microbial growth in most environmental niches, and represents a habitat where most microbial catalyzed activity occurs. Biofilm development in engineering and environmental systems represents one of the most important and persistent issues in the water industry around the world, causing corrosion, membrane biofouling and blockage in filtration systems and pipes. There is no single one-for-all treatment for effective biofouling control because of the highly diverse microbial compositions and characteristics for biofilm developed under different bulk fluid and engineering conditions. The proposed study aims to address the City of Edmonton's groundwater diversion system biofouling control needs. Through conducting field biocide treatment studies in groundwater diversion pipes, and assessing biofilm development and elimination in groundwater systems, the proposed research will (i) identify the effective biocide types and dosing strategies and (ii) establish groundwater biofouling control strategies.
