Quantum computers (QCs), whose computational power derives from a fundamentally different way to encode and process information in quantum superposition states, are anticipated to perform calculations that are impossible for any present or future classical computer, in areas as impactful as simulation of materials, chemistry, prediction of drug behaviour, optimization, and artificial intelligence. The development of quantum technologies is expected to produce immense economic returns. Applications of QCs are as ambitious as reversing climate change and feeding our growing population.We propose an international collaboration with world-renowned experts at the University of New South Wales and University of Buffalo centred on the optimization of the unit cell, or functional unit, of semiconductor-based QCs. The key element behind the processing and networking functionality is the spin of individual particles in solids, in semiconductor devices entirely compatible with industrial microfabrication approaches. Our international alliance brings internationally respected scientists into a close collaboration with Canadian researchers working to bring quantum technologies to the mainstream for the benefit of Canadians, Australians, and Americans.
