Ultrasonic testing (UT) has been used for a number of years in the inspection of safety-critical components. The research community is currently focusing on (1) transforming time-consuming inspections into faster and more efficient methods and (2) inspecting complex parts with intricate or difficult to access geometries. The general objective of this research project is to overcome technology roadblocks and develop innovative ultrasonic testing methods and tools in order to propose novel nondestructive testing (NDT) solutions and develop the next generation of NDT instruments. This general objective targets three areas of interest: 1. ultrasonic imaging, 2. non-contact ultrasonic thickness gauging, 3. the characterization of adhesively bonded assemblies. This project will be conducted by the Piezoelectricity, Ultrasonic Technologies and Materials Laboratory (PULETS) of ÉTS in collaboration with Olympus NDT.
