Decelerated turbulent boundary layers

This research aims at improving our understanding and modelling of turbulent flows encountered in important industrial applications, such as the flows around airplanes, wind turbines or inside turbo engines and hydro turbines. The flows considered are near surfaces and decelerate under the influence of pressure variations. We are seeking a better understanding of the fundamental properties of these flows and an improvement of turbulence models used in industrial flow simulation codes. For that purpose, we use theoretical methods and ideas, precise simulations of carefully chosen flows, and advanced analysis of numerical and experimental databases. Our research will support industrial efforts in developing and improving products that play an important socio-economic role for Canada (aerial, terrestrial and marine vehicles, turbo engines, hydro and wind turbines for power generation). It will help especially in the design and numerical modelling of these products. It will also reinforce our research collaboration with international experts of turbulent flows and it will create an excellent environment for the training of highly qualified engineers, researchers and professors.
